AMIA/HL7 FHIR® Applications Competition

AMIA and HL7 are partnering again to bring an exciting application showcase to the AMIA 2020 Virtual Annual Symposium. AMIA 2020 is the place for you if you have to offer or are interested in an innovative FHIR®-based App working in practice! Now in its third year, here is what’s new about the Showcase:

  1. The Showcase is now a permanent part of the AMIA Annual Symposium.
  2. We will make more content available publicly about this and previous Showcases.
  3. We have partnered with the SMART App Gallery so you can try out as many of the Showcase apps as possible.
  4. The top three entries will receive prize monies from LOF, LLC and the AMIA Informatics Partnership Council.

The HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) Standard has become a sizzling-hot method for accessing information in health information technology systems. As patients move around the healthcare ecosystem, their electronic health records must be available, discoverable and understandable. FHIR® is making that possible, based on over 30 years of work by HL7 on healthcare data exchange and information modeling standards. The Showcase is intended to highlight the best and most innovative FHIR® Apps.

Importantly, AMIA and its partners are committed to help you make a larger audience aware of your App and thus broaden adoption. If you would like your App to be used by the largest number of organizations/people possible, you have come to the right place!

Submit Your FHIR® App!

If you are working on FHIR® and have an App to show, we would like to hear from you! The Showcase is a fun, fast-paced kaleidoscope of practical and innovative FHIR® apps. We are interested in health-related FHIR® Apps* that:

  1. are deployed in a real-world setting, and in use with clinicians, caregivers, patients or people;
  2. address a real-world need or problem in an innovative, efficient and effective way; and
  3. provide clinical value. If you have one or more evaluation studies, so much the better!
     *Please note that your app does not need to use the Substitutable Medical Applications and Reusable Technologies (SMART®) protocol to qualify for the competition.

How Will Your FHIR® App Be Reviewed?

A panel of FHIR® experts and developers from HL7 and AMIA will review your App based on your submission. While it will not be necessary for the reviewers to access your App in a production setting, you need to provide sufficient materials to allow them to review the App thoroughly. The reviewers will select a set of approximately 10 apps for presentation at the AMIA 2020 Virtual Annual Symposium.

How Will You Present Your App?

The showcase will take place on Tuesday, November 17. You will have approximately eight minutes to present your App online. Present the problem you are trying to solve, tell attendees how you went about designing and implementing your solution, and be ready to wow the audience! Presentations will not include the opportunity for questions to allow us to showcase the maximum numbers of apps possible. At the end of the session, attendees will vote on the top three apps presented.

Submission Template

  1. Is your application deployed in a real-world setting, and in use with clinicians, caregivers, patients or people? Yes/no (If your answer is no, please consider submitting in the future).
  2. Project abstract (1,000 characters): Please summarize your submission briefly, including information about the problem you’re trying to solve, how you have solved/are solving it and how your solution worked in practice.
  3. Project rationale, impact and innovation (3,500 characters): Describe the problem/issue your submission is trying to address. Who does the problem affect? What is the impact (in terms of reduction of morbidity/mortality, number of people/patients affected, etc.) of solving the problem, both in the long as well as in the short term? In what ways is your project innovative?
  4. Project design and implementation (7,000 characters): How did your design address the problem? How did you implement your solution and what requirements must be met to be able to do so? What challenges did you have to overcome?
  5. Project evaluation and sustainability (3,500 characters): What kind of qualitative and quantitative data did you gather to evaluate your project, and what conclusions do you draw from them? Did your project achieve its goals in terms of implementation and impact? How will your project be sustained?
  6. How is FHIR used in the App (500 characters)? Briefly describe how your application leverages the FHIR standard, for instance as an end user-facing app or a machine-to-machine interface.
  7. What FHIR release and FHIR resources does your application use (500 characters)? This technical information will help Showcase attendees evaluate whether they could potentially adopt your App.
  8. When was your solution conceived?
  9. When was your solution implemented?
  10. How many users does your solution have or how many patients have been impacted by it ? (please indicate time frame)
