Natural hazards (NHs) associated with climate change have been increasing in frequency and intensity. These acute events impact humans both directly and through their effects on social and environmental determinants of health. Rather than relying on a fully reactive incident response disposition, it is crucial to ramp up preparedness initiatives for worsening case scenarios. In this perspective, we review the landscape of NH effects for human health and explore the [...]

Healthcare organizations are increasing social determinants of health (SDH) screening and documentation in the electronic health record (EHR). Physicians may use SDH data for medical decision-making and to provide referrals to social care resources. Physicians must be aware of these data to use them, however, and little is known about physicians' awareness of EHR-based SDH documentation or documentation capabilities. We therefore leveraged national physician survey data to measure level of [...]

Symptom checkers can help address high demand for SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) testing and care by providing patients with self-service access to triage recommendations. However, health systems may be hesitant to invest in these tools, as their associated efficiency gains have not been studied. We aimed to quantify the operational efficiency gains associated with use of an online COVID-19 symptom checker as an alternative to a telephone hotline.

People who experience marginalization, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Plus (ie, all other marginalized genders and sexual orientations) people (LGBTQ+) experience discrimination during healthcare interactions, which negatively impacts patient-provider communication and care. Yet, scarce research examines the lived experience of unfair treatment among patients from marginalized groups to guide patient-centered tools that improve healthcare equity.

Electronic communication of prescription discontinuation, or CancelRx, has the potential to improve medication safety. We aimed to describe the proportion of discontinued outpatient medications that would result in a CancelRx message to understand its impact on medication safety. We used a data report to identify all outpatient medications discontinued in the electronic health record (EHR) of an academic health system in 1 month (October 2018). Among all 63 485 medications discontinued [...]

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has achieved high levels of accuracy in the diagnosis of various diseases, its impact on physicians' decision-making performance in clinical practice is uncertain. This study aims to assess the impact of AI on the diagnostic performance of physicians with differing levels of self-efficacy under working conditions involving different time pressures.

The foundational role of health information exchanges (HIEs) is to facilitate communication between clinical partners in real time. Once this infrastructure for the secure and immediate flow of patient information is built, however, HIEs can benefit community public health and clinical care in myriad other ways that are in line with their mission, goals, patient privacy, and funding structures. We encourage the development of community-integrated HIEs and list specific steps [...]
