How can you engage in AMIA Public Policy work if you’re not on the PPC?

Policy “North Star” Priorities and Some Related Projects

1. Support the healthcare workforce by advancing the field of informatics and reducing burden on clinicians.

  • Through the 25x5 Task Force, AMIA has updated its policy recommendations to reform Prior Authorization.
  • AMIA began advocating against the Department of Education's de-professionalization of various health care degrees, specifically Public health & Nursing, by working more closely with nursing and public health organizations.

2. Advocate for evidence-based care and decision-support through informatics, including through machine-learning and AI.

  • Acted as a resource to Capitol Hill to demystify AI and educate representatives on the genuine benefits and risks of AI in healthcare, particularly via our annual Hill Day and The Algorithm Will See You Now, a one-day intensive bootcamp on AI for Congressional staff to better understand the unintended consequences of AI.
  • Convened the National Academy of Medicine, Coalition for Health AI, the Health AI Partnership, Association of American Medical Colleges, and UCSF CoDEx to advise on resources such as the NAM AI Code of Conduct, host educational sessions for membership, and be a leading voice of AI in healthcare.

3. Advocate for health IT solutions that ameliorate systemic biases and discrimination.

  • Focused on educating federal law and policy makers on the dangers of further entrenching data bias and inequitable access to healthcare if AI is misused.
  • Developed a policy principle focused specifically on Health and Healthcare Equity to guide our policy work in this area. See AMIA's Public Policy Principles!

4. Advocate for ongoing funding for the field, including informatics research.

  • During 2025, AMIA focused on advocating for funding for agencies that support informatics, including the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes and Centers, and the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP) via the annual Hill Day, sign-on letters, and creating a Call to Action page on our website that provides talking points and resources for members to contact their elected federal representatives. See the Call to Action resources!
  • AMIA created the Friends of ASTP, a free/voluntary coalition of organizations that supported ASTP in 2025 by educating law and policy makers on the small federal office, advocating for funding to Congress, and creating this network of 40+ like-minded organizations. See more about Friends of ASTP!

Some AMIA Wins – Expanding Our Reach and Demonstrating Expertise

  • Legislative Engagement via Virtual Hill Day: AMIA held its annual virtual Hill Day! 33 AMIA member volunteers virtually visited 60 Hill offices, including the members' representatives, relevant Congressional Committee leaders, and those offices interested in AMIA priorities. AMIA discussed reducing documentation burden and responsible AI in healthcare. The connections made during the virtual event resulted in Congress people regularly reaching out to AMIA to further discuss these two issues throughout the year. See more about the virtual Hill Day!
  • Regulatory Engagement via Comment Submissions: AMIA submitted 37 comment letters in 2025, which is a 68% increase from last year. To craft these responses such that they represented our members' needs and expertise, PPC used our Public Policy Principles, engaged other AMIA Committees, and tapped the larger membership. Additionally, in 2025 AMIA dramatically increased our collaboration with like-minded organizations via coalition participation. See our comments! See our coalitions!
