The new year is off to an exciting start for AMIA! As we embark on another year of shaping the informatics profession, I'd like to share a preview of just some of what is ahead for all of us who are invested as members of AMIA and how, together, we'll create meaningful impact in 2025.
Three Ways to Get Involved Early in 2025
We become members of AMIA to learn from one another, forge change-driving professional connections, and unite our energy to help transform healthcare and patient outcomes through informatics. All of this happens only when we become involved. Here are three ways that you can get involved right now.
Renew your AMIA membership.
If you have not already done so, it is time to renew your AMIA membership! Your membership expires at the end of each calendar year, but you may not notice because of our January grace period. If you haven't renewed by January 31, you will lose access to the AMIA online community and journals. Take a moment today to log in and complete your renewal.
Register for AMIA's Informatics Summit.
If you've been around AMIA, you know that our Informatics Summit is a can't-miss event on translational bioinformatics, precision medicine, clinical research informatics, and data science and artificial intelligence – all in one conference. Our colleagues Thomas Campion, PhD, Daniella Meeker, PhD, Ece Uzun, MS, PhD, FAMIA, and Firas Wehbe, MD, PhD, together with our full Scientific Program Committee and Reviewers, have done an incredible job of crafting this year's event. The Informatics Summit will take place March 10-13, 2025, in Pittsburgh, PA. Register by January 31 for early bird discounts.
Ready to contribute to the 2025 AMIA Symposium? Calls are open now.
AMIA's Symposium is the premier learning and networking destination for more than 2,500 informaticians from across the world. The 2025 Call for Participation is open now. I hope you will strongly consider sharing your scientific outcomes and expertise. Choose from nine presentation types, seven programmatic themes, and more than 75 keywords, spotlighting everything from patient-reported outcomes to computational biology. The deadline for these submissions is March 19, 2025. Also consider self-nominating for the Symposium Scientific Program Committee or volunteering to serve as a Symposium Reviewer. Both of these opportunities are open only until February 3, 2025.
What's Ahead in 2025
In-depth strategic planning for AMIA.
We all know that informatics as a field is rapidly changing. Our field has many opportunities to affect changes in healthcare right now. This means that developing our strategic plan as an organization is more critical than ever. A robust process for authoring AMIA's 2026-2029 strategic plan will kick off in the first quarter of 2025. This effort will be co-chaired by Deepti Pandita, MD, FACP, FAMIA, Victoria Tiase, PhD, RN-BC, FAMIA, FAAN, FNAP, and Oliver J. Bear Don't Walk IV, PhD, Apsáalooke, as we tackle our three strategic pillars: Promote and Build the Field, Empower Our Members, and Optimize Infrastructure. Watch for calls for participation in this vital process soon.
Member value and member experience initiatives.
AMIA is a dynamic, growing professional association and with this growth come many needs and opportunities to evolve the quality of our community experiences. In 2024, we made terrific strides in identifying new leadership and affirming key priorities. This work has infused our leaders and staff with fresh energy and excitement to shape the future. This spirit of renewal will continue to flow into several 2025 task force efforts relating to the types of membership, benefits, and experiences available to AMIA members. Calls for participation in these task force efforts will be promoted throughout the year.
More multi-disciplinary collaboration.
We live out this AMIA value in a variety of ways, but one that you'll see first-hand when you attend the Informatics Summit is our partnership hosting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) meeting for the Biostatistics, Biomedical Informatics, and Data Science (BIDS) enterprise committee on Friday, March 14, 2025, adjacent to our Informatics Summit in Pittsburgh, PA. This gathering brings together leaders from the NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program to engage in critical discussions around advancing informatics in clinical and translational science.
Co-locating these events provides an opportunity to leverage AMIA's convening authority in bringing together leaders from many of the 60 leading NIH-funded research institutions to discuss data sharing models, digital health innovations, and provide updates around the expanded focus of NCATS programs to encompass a broader range of disciplines, including biostatistics and data science.
Advancing informatics through policy and advocacy efforts.
In 2024, AMIA dramatically increased our policy engagement with the federal government. AMIA held its first-ever virtual Hill Day, connecting with lawmakers and building relationships that position AMIA as a respected resource to call upon throughout the year, particularly regarding AI. AMIA also increased our federal regulatory engagement by responding to 22 comment opportunities, which is a 193% increase over the last five years. We are excited to build on this engagement momentum in 2025.
Save the Dates: Clinical Informatics Conference and 2025 Annual Symposium.
Gathering at key events throughout the year is one of the best and most memorable experiences of being an AMIA member. These events may sound like they are a long way off, but schedules fill up quickly. Mark your calendars now for AMIA's Clinical Informatics Conference (CIC), May 20-22, 2025, in Anaheim, CA, and the 2025 Annual Symposium, November 15-19, 2025, in Atlanta, GA. Watch for early bird registration to take advantage of your membership savings.
As a fellow member of AMIA, I am excited about all the events, opportunities, and important conversations ahead for us in 2025! Thank you for being a part of the informatics professional community and for your contributions to our field.
Yours sincerely,
