AMIA 2019 Health Informatics Policy Forum Keynotes
Jack Ryan, PhD, serves as the Associate Director for Intelligent Flight Systems in the Research Directorate of NASA’s Langley Research Center. He previously served as the Branch Head for the Safety-Critical Avionics Systems Branch, the Dynamic Systems and Control Branch, and the Branch Chief of the Controls and Dynamics Branch at the Armstrong Flight Research Center. He has extensive research experience including serving as the Chief Engineer of the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System project and the Principle Investigator of the Artificial Intelligence Flight Advisor project. He has conducted research with the X-56 project, X-48 project, X-43 project, Autonomous Aerial Refueling Demonstration project, Networked UAV Teams project, the Autonomous Formation Flight project, and others. He received a BA in Physics from St. John’s University, MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and PhD in Aerospace Engineering from UCLA.
Robert M. Califf, MD, MACC, is the Head of Medical Strategy and Policy for Verily and Google Health, and Adjunct Professor at Duke University and Stanford University. Prior to this Dr. Califf was the vice chancellor for health data science for the Duke University School of Medicine; director of Duke Forge, Duke’s center for health data science; and the Donald F. Fortin, MD, Professor of Cardiology. He served as Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2015-2016, and as Commissioner of Food and Drugs from 2016-2017. A nationally and internationally recognized leader in cardiovascular medicine, health outcomes research, healthcare quality, and clinical research, Dr. Califf is a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Califf was the founding director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute and is one of the most frequently cited authors in biomedical science.
Scott W. Bauguess, PhD, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, and the Director of a new program on Securities Markets Regulation in the Center for Enterprise and Policy Analytics. Prior to joining the UT-Austin faculty, he served as the Deputy Director of the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA) at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In that role, he oversaw data management and custom analytics programs designed to detect non-compliance with securities markets regulation, and supervised the economic analyses in recommendations to the Commission to enact federal rules related to corporate disclosure and governance, asset management, and structured finance. Dr. Bauguess received his PhD in Finance from Arizona State University in 2004, holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering, and prior to his doctoral studies, spent six years working as an engineer in the high-tech industry.
