Special Message from the AMIA President and Board Chair
Gretchen-Purcell-Jackson

Dear AMIA Members,

Happy February! As many of you know, I am passionate about science, and in this message, I will share some of our activities to advance informatics through scientific evidence.

In addition to being the AMIA President and Board Chair, I am also the Scientific Program Committee (SPC) Chair for the AMIA 2022 Annual Symposium. My outstanding Vice Chairs and I are delighted to release the Call for Participation, and we encourage you to submit your best work. Scientific evidence is the language of trust in healthcare, and this year’s theme is Informatics: Building the Evidence Base. The SPC encourages rigorous scientific studies that generate high quality evidence to build trust, reproducible methods and public data to foster transparency, and special attention to research ethics, privacy, and security to demonstrate scientific integrity.

We also have a new presentation type this year: Informatics Debates. This format provides conference participants with the opportunity to engage in the healthy debates that are necessary for scientific advances in any field. Get to work – the submission deadline is March 9.

As an scientist, I am very proud of our new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Evaluation Showcase, which allows research teams to present comprehensive evaluation studies of AI tools at the three AMIA meetings over the year. I want to thank the special AI Showcase SPC members who helped review the Stage I submissions over the winter break.

The Stage I submissions are slated for presentation at the AMIA 2022 Informatics Summit next month. We accepted 20 outstanding studies, five as oral presentations and 15 as posters, and these finalists are working on their Stage II submissions for presentation at the Clinical Informatics Conference in May.

At our meeting last week, the Board approved a virtual component for each of the 2022 AMIA meetings. Recognizing some speakers and attendees can’t physically attend, we will have a virtual participation option that will be designed by the SPC based on need.

I look forward to working with you in the coming months, and I hope to see you at the Informatics Summit in Chicago. Don’t forget – the early bird deadline is Thursday. Take advantage of your AMIA member rate.

More soon!
