Special Message from the Board

It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of April. Summer will be here before we know it!

AMIA staff and member volunteers have been hard at work on initiatives and efforts to advance our strategic plan. We are pleased to formally announce the AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC) eligibility criteria, examination specifications, and other program details.

AMIA staff and member volunteers have been hard at work on initiatives and efforts to advance our strategic plan. We are pleased to formally announce the AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC) eligibility criteria, examination specifications, and other program details.

AMIA established the AHIC program to address the needs created by the growing number and expanding role of health informaticians and the increased impact of their work in healthcare delivery, public health, and consumer health.

The AHIC program (i.e., becoming certified as an ACHIP) provides objective, third-party validation of mastery of health informatics and demonstrates expertise to employers, patients, grantors, publications, students, and other stakeholders.

AHIC provides health informatics practice benchmarking and competency criteria that support health informatics professionals and organizations that hire them. Further, by supporting the use of best health informatics practices, AHIC is expected to strengthen the healthcare system and protect public safety.

There are two dimensions of AHIC eligibility – a graduate degree in health informatics or a related field and “qualifying” health informatics experience. The amount of required experience is determined by type of graduate degree.

Wondering if you are eligible to sit for the AHIC exam? Review the AHIC eligibility criteria and Certification Guide to determine if you meet the requirements. If you are uncertain about your eligibility, email us at certification@amia.org with any questions. AMIA will provide an eligibility check free of charge.

We are proud of the progress we have made. As a key component of our strategic plan, AMIA is committed to advancing the field, supporting informatics professionals, and promoting informatics best practice to assure that health data and information technology are used most effectively to promote health and health care.

Stay tuned for an announcement in the coming weeks with application details.

We hope that you and yours remain safe and healthy.
