Yanshan Wang, PhD

Yanshan Wang, PhD, FAMIA, is Vice Chair of Research and Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics; Director of AI for the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI); and Principal Investigator of the Clinical Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Laboratory (PittNAIL Lab) at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on integrating natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML), and generative AI to advance healthcare delivery and clinical and translational research. He has led a robust, externally funded research program that has secured more than $10 million in active funding from agencies and organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He currently serves as the PI/MPI on several active NIH R01 grants totaling approximately $6 million. He has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and has an h-index of 43 and an i10-index of 108. His research has been widely disseminated through keynote presentations, conference panels, and media coverage, including coverage by Forbes. He has mentored and advised more than 30 students across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. His students have earned competitive national recognition, including recognition as a Best Student Paper at AMIA and NIH Training Awards.
