Public Biography
Dr Jos Aarts is retired Assistant Professor of Health Technology Assessment at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Victoria in Canada. He was a Research Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University at Buffalo, NY, from 2014 till 2016. His research interest is sociotechnical understanding and economic evaluation of health informatics, with a focus on the impact of health IT on professional work practices and workflow, decision support systems, big data analytics, usability and medication safety. He has supervised more than 80 master students and 4 doctoral candidates. He has published more than 75 research papers in peer reviewed journals, including Health Affairs, Health Technology and Policy, the Journal of American Medical Informatics Association, the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the International Journal of Medical Informatics, the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Methods of Information in Medicine and BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making. Dr Aarts has been a visiting scholar at Oregon Health and Science University, Portland (OR), the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney in Australia and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and the Association for Information Systems (AIS). He is on the editorial board of JAMIA Open. He is senior editor for Health Technology and Policy and associate editor for Frontiers in Digital Health. Dr Aarts is an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI), honoring his scientific contributions to the field. For his contributions to the practice of biomedical informatics he has been inducted as Fellow of the American Medical informatics Association (FAMIA). In 2023 Dr Aarts received an MSc in History and Philosophy of Science from Utrecht University.

Dr. Jos Aarts is a Senior Research Scientist in the Institute of Health Policy and Management (iBMG) at Erasmus University. He is also an adjunct assistant professor in the University of Victoria and visiting research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. For more than 10 years he has investigated the effects that computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems had on health professionals. Especially he studied the implementation of CPOE in large academic centers and developed theoretical frameworks to understand such processes. Dr. Aarts conducted studies both in Europe and the United States.
