Applications are now being accepted for the JAMIA Student Editorial Board.
The JAMIA Student Editorial Board (SEB) gives selected trainees the opportunity to review journal manuscripts under the mentorship of the associate editors and editorial board. The SEB has provided outstanding informatics trainees with in-depth exposure to the peer-review process and the operation of a scientific journal since it was established in 2003. Additional details about this program may be found in a published editorial (Johnson and Miller, JAMIA 2004; 11:87-8). https://doi.org/10.1197/jamia.M1473
Under the leadership of Jessica Ancker, PhD, FACMI and Joanna Abraham, PhD, FACMI, SEB members will be assigned about 6 manuscripts per year to review and will moderate the monthly online JAMIA Journal Club. SEB reviews are integrated into the routine JAMIA manuscript review process, and in addition, SEB members will receive feedback from the journal editors. SEB members are expected to treat manuscripts with the same strict confidentiality employed by full reviewers and Editorial Board members. SEB members, who are expected to serve a 2-year term, will be listed on the Editorial Board page of the journal and will have the opportunity to attend annual Editorial Board meetings.
Eligibility and Application Process
Applicants must be trainees in good standing in an informatics or informatics-related training program when they apply and throughout the duration of their anticipated 2-year SEB term. This means candidates should apply to the SEB only if their expected graduation or completion date is later than December 1, 2026. The strongest candidates will be those: (a) with experience as a first author of a peer-reviewed paper that has been published or is in press; (b) research experience in informatics, data science, health care, public health, or computer science; (c) solid knowledge of study design and quantitative and/or qualitative research methods; and (d) strong skills in written English. Consistent with AMIA and JAMIA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, we will consider these values in our selection of SEB members.
The application will include a personal statement, a mock manuscript review, a CV, and a letter of reference from the student’s mentor/advisor.
