The Clinical Informatics Subspecialty Board Examination is required for physicians seeking board certification in this subspecialty. It is administered annually and marks a key step following completion of an eligible training pathway.

American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)

Physicians who meet eligibility requirements apply through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).

  • Must hold current certification from at least one American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board
  • Diplomates of any ABMS member board are eligible if other requirements are met

American Board of Pathology (ABPath)

Physicians certified by the American Board of Pathology must apply through ABPath.
Certification in Clinical Informatics is jointly administered by ABPath and ABPM, including shared responsibility for:

  • Applicant qualifications
  • Examination standards
  • Certification requirements

  • One-day, multiple-choice examination
  • Administered at test centers across the United States and select international locations
  • Typically offered over a two-week period in October–November

Alternative Certification Option
