What’s Required?

To maintain ACHIP status, you’ll need to meet two core requirements: active practice and professional development.  Together, these ensure you’re not only practicing health informatics—but also growing with it.

ACHIPs who prefer to recertify via examination rather than reporting professional development activities must meet the active practice requirement and take and pass the AHIC Examination prior to their certification expiration date.

Active Practice

Demonstrate your hands-on involvement in the field by engaging in one or more of the following:

  • Leading or performing health informatics activities and processes
  • Teaching health informatics
  • Conducting health informatics research

Informatics work must average at least 20% of your time over the recertification period.

Professional Development

Keep your knowledge sharp and your skills relevant with recognized professional development activities. The Health Informatics Certification Commission (HICC) awards Professional Development Units (PDUs) for qualifying activities.

Two Categories of Professional Development

Category 1: Coursework & Continuing Education
Learning experiences aligned with the AHIC Exam Outline.

Category 2: Scholarly Activities & Professional Service
Beyond your day-to-day role—these contributions advance the field and expand your expertise.

Earn 60 PDUs over four years to qualify for recertification.
