Step-by-Step: How to Match with a Clinical Informatics Fellowship

There’s a specific, annual process to match with a clinical informatics fellowship. Here’s a high-level overview of how the process works each year.

April: Register for ERAS.
ERAS is the system used to collect application materials from applicants and provide them to programs. Setting up your profile in ERAS is a distinct step from submitting your application.

Early June: Submit your application in ERAS.
This is the general application for fellowships; application to specific programs comes later. Meeting this June deadline is required to be eligible to submit to specific fellowships later. View the ERAS timeline.

July: Apply to accredited Clinical Informatics fellowships.
It’s time to apply to specific programs of your choosing. A robust list of AMIA Academic Forum programs is available to all AMIA members.

Summer/Fall: Program interviews take place.
These are managed fully by individual programs.

Join AMIA.
Join AMIA. A current AMIA Student/Trainee membership is required to participate in the AMIA Clinical Informatics Match.

Mid-December: Match Day!
Those who match to a fellowship are contacted by programs on this day. Watch ERAS for the specific date each year.

Late-December: Post-Match Process.
If you didn’t match in the AMIA Match, you may be able to find a fellowship program that has open slots after the AMIA Match. Be sure your ERAS profile is up to date.

Clinical Informatics is transforming how care is delivered. AMIA’s Match connects you with leading fellowship programs, giving you the opportunity to drive innovation, improve patient outcomes, and lead change across the healthcare system.

Find your match

The AMIA Clinical Informatics Fellowship Match (different than the NRMP and other fellowship matches) is the preferred method to match with a clinical informatics fellowship. Review how to apply for specific steps and timeline.

The AMIA match is based on the same underlying "Stable Marriage" algorithm as the NRMP match, with some additional features to support the funding constraints of CI programs. Like the NRMP, the AMIA match preferentially favors applicants so that they can match with the highest possible program on their list.

Though we are confident in the match algorithm on its own, because the Clinical Informatics match is still relatively small, we are able to perform an audit to ensure the results are accurate. This audit is performed by two independent individuals after all the applicant and program rank lists have been submitted, but before the results are posted.

Applicants must be a current Student/Trainee Member or Professional Member of AMIA to participate in the match.

Membership includes access to the match plus full AMIA benefits. The Student Membership fee is $50 and there is no additional fee for the match.

All programs/institutions must be a member of the Academic Forum Program to participate in the match.
