AMIA supports the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) effort to move beyond publication counts, journal impact factors, and citation metrics when measuring scientific impact. AMIA recommends that NIH reward rigorous methods, reproducibility, replication studies, data and software sharing, team science, mentorship, multi-site validation, standardized outcome reporting, and long-term public value. The comments emphasize that informatics contributions such as datasets, software, AI models, clinical decision support tools, interoperability standards, implementation guides, and real-world evidence should be recognized as meaningful scientific outputs.
