The National Library of Medicine (NLM), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather public input on the future directions of its biomedical informatics and data science extramural research programs. This initiative aims to refine NLM's research priorities to better align with emerging trends and address unmet needs in the field.

AMIA believes the future of informatics research should be guided by those doing important work in the field. We encourage all AMIA members to respond to the ongoing Request for Information.

Purpose of the RFI

The RFI invites feedback from a broad range of contributors, including health professionals, researchers, public health workers, community organizations, and the general public. The goal is to identify research gaps, transformative opportunities, and underexplored areas that NLM could address through its extramural research programs. This is an opportunity for contributors to influence the direction of biomedical informatics and data science research. Insights gathered will inform a strategic vision to guide future investments in biomedical informatics and data science.

Key Areas of Interest

The National Library of Medicine is particularly interested in comments related to:

  • Emerging Trends: Anticipating future developments in biomedical informatics and data science.
  • Research Gaps: Identifying areas where current research is lacking or insufficient.
  • Transformative Opportunities: Highlighting innovative approaches that could significantly advance the field.
  • Underexplored Areas: Bringing attention to topics that have not received adequate research focus.

How to Respond

Visit the NIH website to view the RFI and submit your response.

The deadline for submissions is July 14, 2025.
