The 2025 National Academy of Medicine (NAM) annual meeting was recently held October 18–20, bringing together leaders from across health and biomedical sciences to explore the theme, Frontiers of AI & Health: Care, Discovery, and Education. The meeting highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare delivery, biomedical research, and medical education.

AMIA is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions and leadership of our members to the Academy and at this year’s meeting, including:

Scientific Program Leadership

Drs. Patricia Brennan, Kevin Johnson, and Lucila Ohno-Machado served on the NAM Scientific Program Committee, helping to shape the meeting’s forward-looking agenda.

Expert Panel Participation

Drs. Patricia Brennan, Chris Longhurst, Philip Payne, Sarah Rossetti, Kevin Johnson, Paul Harris, and Eric Horvitz shared their informatics expertise in panel sessions on AI-driven healthcare innovation, workforce training, and responsible AI governance and ethics.

Committee Leadership

Dr. Marylyn Ritchie’s service as Chair of the Section 1 Membership Committee. AMIA congratulates Dr. Ritchie her service in this role and recognizes her pivotal role in overseeing the review and evaluation process for prospective NAM members.

Celebrating New NAM Members

Election to the National Academy of Medicine is among the highest honors in health and medicine, recognizing individuals for outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. At each annual meeting, members from the prior year’s class are formally inducted and a new class of elected members are announced.

AMIA proudly celebrates NAM’s announcement of the following 2025 newly elected members:

  • William Hersh, MD, FACMI, FAMIA, professor at Oregon Health & Science University, was honored for his pioneering leadership in biomedical informatics education, blending innovative curriculum design with world-class research in information retrieval.
  • Michael E. Matheny, MD, MS, MPH, FACMI, FAMIA, FIAHSI, professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, was recognized for his groundbreaking work in veteran health care informatics and AI-driven medical product safety surveillance.

Six AMIA members elected to NAM in 2024 were formally inducted at this year’s meeting:

These newly elected and inducted members join an esteemed group of more than 50 AMIA members elected to NAM who continue to advance biomedicine, healthcare and informatics – together exemplifying the transformative power of informatics in advancing education, public health, and patient care. We celebrate their leadership, innovation, and dedication to the field.
