(WASHINGTON, DC) -- The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) announces that it has joined the National Health Council (NHC) as a Partner of Patient Organizations (PPO) member. The membership reflects AMIA’s ongoing commitment to advancing health informatics in service of patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community.

Founded in 1920, the NHC is the only organization that brings together all segments of the health community to provide a united voice for the more than 160 million people living with chronic diseases and disabilities and their family caregivers. The NHC’s membership includes more than 170 national health-related organizations and businesses, with its core membership comprising the nation’s leading patient advocacy organizations. As a PPO member, AMIA will contribute research, clinical, and policy expertise that impacts the health ecosystem in collaboration with patients and family caregivers.

AMIA’s membership in the NHC is a direct reflection of the association’s 2026–2028 strategic plan, which specifically identifies the NHC as a key partner in advancing AMIA’s mission. The two organizations share priorities in areas including artificial intelligence, health equity, access, and innovation. As informatics professionals play an increasingly central role in how health data and technology are developed and deployed, this partnership will also help elevate awareness of informatics among patient communities and advocacy organizations.

“Joining the National Health Council is a meaningful step in AMIA’s mission to ensure that the expertise of informatics professionals is represented in conversations that shape patient-centered health policy,” said AMIA Chief Executive Officer Amanda Hanova. “The NHC brings together an extraordinary coalition of patient organizations, advocacy groups, and industry partners. This membership creates new opportunities for AMIA to contribute our expertise on shared priorities—from AI to health equity—while raising awareness of the informatics profession among the patient and caregiver communities we ultimately serve.”

“AMIA’s members are at the forefront of creating the technologies that support improved clinical decision-making, health equity, and patient engagement,” said AMIA Board Chair and President Philip Payne, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA. “Our partnership with the National Health Council recognizes that health informatics is foundational to operating a modern, high-quality, safe, and patient-centered healthcare system. This collaboration will strengthen the connection between the informatics community and the patients and caregivers we ultimately serve.”

“We are excited to welcome AMIA as a member of the NHC. AMIA’s mission to lead the way in transforming health care through trusted science, education, and the practice of informatics is admirable and ideally suited to inform and engage the patient community and other health care stakeholders,” said National Health Council Chief Executive Officer Randall L. Rutta. “We look forward to collaborating with AMIA on an array of strategic initiatives to expand and reform health care access for all Americans.”

AMIA’s NHC membership adds to the association’s growing portfolio of strategic partnerships and public engagement initiatives aimed at elevating the role of informatics professionals in shaping health policy and practice nationwide.
