AMIA's Position on Equitable Healthcare and Scientific Integrity

Washington, D.C. – It is the position of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) that U.S. health system leaders are accountable for assuring equitable access to care and preventive services grounded in scientific evidence.

AMIA stands firmly with the scientific community in upholding the established gold standard for science, a methodological, evidence-based foundation built upon empirical rigor, objectivity, transparency, peer review, and continuous self-correction. This standard has powered American scientific innovation for centuries and continues to drive breakthrough discoveries in medicine, public health, and biomedical informatics.

In light of the recent turnover at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the abrupt dismissal of Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) members, and the ongoing and longstanding need for high quality evidence-based healthcare guidance, the American Medical Informatics Association reaffirms our unwavering commitment to advancing science and health information transparency to improve the health of  individuals and populations, as guided by AMIA’s Public Policy Principles.

AMIA urges the leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to recognize that while scientific progress depends on rigorous debate and challenging existing ideas, this process must be based on verifiable evidence not unscientific policy shifts.

We call upon HHS to advance evidence-based policies, support dedicated researchers and peer-reviewed science, maintain continuity in critical public health programs, preserve agency integrity, and restore full funding to scientific agencies.

AMIA urges Congress to exercise oversight and demand transparency for these growing threats to the disruption of patient care and sound scientific research.

AMIA stands ready to engage in constructive dialogue with HHS leadership, Congress, and all relevant federal agencies. We echo the call from former CDC directors spanning multiple administrations that Congress must exercise its oversight authority over HHS. The health of our nation depends on maintaining scientific integrity within HHS and across all federal agencies. AMIA will continue to advocate for evidence-based decision making and the protection of scientific processes essential to advancing human health and wellbeing.
