Dr. Houston was the Founding Chief of the Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In 2019, he joined the Wake Forest University School of Medicine as Vice Chair for Learning Health Systems in the Department of Internal Medicine

Dr. Houston has been a pioneer in consumer health informatics whose research program focuses on patient behavior change, and also includes applied health informatics for healthcare provider quality improvement and decision support. Dr. Houston is internationally recognized for his consumer health informatics research (CHI), and has served AMIA as chair of the CHI working group. He is PI of the eHealth Quality Enhancement Research Initiative, a national VA consumer health informatics Center that includes a portfolio of eight grants, and whose goal is to enhance veteran self-management and participation in collaborative care through the design, evaluation, and implementation of appropriate eHealth tools. He also directs the Biomedical Informatics Component of the NIH-funded University of Massachusetts Clinical and Translational Sciences Award.
