Historic ACMI Biography

Profile image
Dr. Uzuner has been a leader of the clinical NLP community since organizing the first ever shared-task in this domain in 2006. Privacy concerns limit access to EHRs, so relevant research is often conducted by privileged parties and on EHRs of a specific institution. EHRs differ among institution and even departments. Consequently, systems developed on different EHRs cannot be fairly compared; learning from these systems and building on them becomes difficult. Dr. Uzuner has published numerous (87) well-cited, peer-reviewed papers on novel NLP approaches and has been very active in improving access to de-identified clinical notes for research since 2005-2006. She de-identified, annotated, and released clinical corpora for twelve different cutting-edge NLP tasks since 2006. Her methods and data are heavily relied upon in the community.
