Public Biography
Dr. Witherspoon is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison. He trained in Internal Medicine and Nuclear Medicine at the Ochsner Medical Institutions in New Orleans and Duke University Medical Center in Durham and is Board Certified in both. After serving in the United States Navy he joined the staff of the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans where his practice included Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, and the creation and management of Ochsnerís immunoassay laboratory. Dr. Witherspoon served in an Informatics role or as CIO during much of his Ochsner career. He conceptualized and built a clinical repository in the mid-1980s and subsequently shepherded the design, development, deployment, and certification of Ochsnerís legacy EHR platform. Ochsner has recently implemented a broad suite of practice support, billing, medical record, and clinical applications from Epic. Dr. Witherspoon is now Chief Medical Information Officer Emeritus at the Ochsner Health System.

The committee recommends advocacy issues and activities and identifies critical areas for AMIA's strategic advocacy engagement for Board approval. The committee works with AMIA’s policy consultant, staff, and Board to develop annual work plans which support the strategic directions set by the Board. The committee works with the staff in developing and reviewing draft submissions in response to requests for comments in support of AMIA positions and helps prepare position papers on matters of public policy.
