Public Biography
Dr. Schaffer has devoted his 20 years at Cleveland Clinic to developing platforms that provide access to care while removing the geographic barriers to care. Having led the development of patient and referring physician portals MyConsult and DrCon-nect, he led the development of the Global MedAssist Program, providing secure, real time telemedicine support to traveling users worldwide. An active board-certified joint replacement surgeon, Dr. Schaffer is a staff member in the Center for Joint Replacement Institute where he is the physician champion on many digital health programs and leads the Advanced Operative Technology Group, developing novel technologies for the ar-throplasty patient population including the physical and technology upgrading of the operating rooms and management of the arthroplasty episode of care. These devel-opments led to the establishment of the Orthopaedic Informatics Working Group. Dr. Schaffer has participated in many healthcare software development projects from clinical applications to supply chain management and episode of care man-agement systems. He has served on med-ical industry and venture capital advisory boards including active participation in a number of successful medically related start-ups. Prior to Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Schaffer was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Sur-gery at Brigham and Womenís Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Schaffer was Associate Director of the Decision Sys-tems Group, a medical informatics labora-tory and President and subsequently Chief Executive Officer of Harmonie Group, Inc., a corporate software spin-off from the la-boratory with external venture and corpo-rate funding. He contributed to his com-munities as an active firefighter until his retirement from the front line and continues as a member of the Shaker Heights Police Department. An honors graduate of Haverford College and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, he com-pleted his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, a fellow-ship in adult reconstruction at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and a research fellowship at Chil-dren's Hospital of Boston and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Schaffer holds an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Most importantly, Dr. Schaffer and his spouse are the proud parents of two mar-ried children and very proud grandparents as well.
