Jack W. Smith, Jr., is Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry in the Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine at Ohio State University. His primary research interests are in the areas of knowledge-based systems for clinical decision support. intelligent tutoring systems in medicine, cognitive simulation. and knowledge representation. Application of these interests to pathology has resulted in the PATHEX (PATHology Expert) system for the interpretation of laboratory tests and morphologic descriptions of tissue. Several knowledge bases have been created for PATHEX.
