Dr. Yu is known for her question answering system AskHermes, judged "most usable" in Human Genetics. She received $5.8 million as PI on 10 projects and published 68 peer-reviewed papers ("best paper" in the 2011 IMIA Yearbook and another included in Russ Altman's 2012 "Year in Review"). She provides service to the Center for Scientific Review (Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics Study Section), the National Library of Medicine (two ad hoc study sections), the Pacific Symposium of Biocomputing (co-chair twice), the IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (co-chair twice), and JBI (Associate Editor). She was the founding director and co-director (respectively) of the Center for Biomedical Data and Language Processing and the Biomedical and Health Informatics Research Institute, both at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
