Public Biography
Derek J. Baughman, MD, is the Medical Director of Primary Care at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, a telemedicine research consultant, and leads a telemedicine pilot program at WellSpan Health. He’s held leadership positions across organized medicine, including the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American Medical Association (AMA). As a visiting scholar at the Robert Graham Center and an intern at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center, he developed expertise in HEDIS measures and alternative payment model design.

As a current MS candidate in clinical informatics at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Baughman’s research emphasizes AI-enhanced medical billing and coding, aligning with his passion for payment innovation in U.S. healthcare. He has authored over 25 peer-reviewed articles and presentations on value-based care and quality performance in healthcare, spanning the state level to international platforms.

In his personal life, Dr. Baughman cherishes time with his wife and two young daughters, with a third daughter on the way. He is an active church member, enjoys home workouts, loves pizza, and relaxes by reading books and sci-fi movies.

Looking ahead, Dr. Baughman is positioned to merge his experiences to bridge gaps across federal, private, and research healthcare sectors. His goal is to lead transformative operations in a hybrid environment, steering healthcare systems toward innovative and effective models of care.
