Public Biography
Dr. Lehmann retired in 2024 as the Willis C. Maddrey MD Distinguished Professor in Clinical Sciences and Professor for Pediatrics, Population and Data Sciences, and Bioinformatics at UT Southwestern where he directed the Clinical Informatics Center. Dr. Lehmann established and lead the Master of Science in Health Informatics Program. He conceived and launched the journal Applied Clinical Informatics, devoted to original research and commentary on the use of computer automation in the day-to-day practice of medicine and he served as the Editor-in-Chief since its inception. In 2009, he co-edited Pediatric Informatics, the first textbook on this subject. Dr. Lehmann served on the board of the American Medical Informatics Association from 2008 to 2013 and served two terms as the organization's secretary. He is the recipient of the inaugural Physician Innovator of the Year award from the Physicians in AMIA community. In 2010, he was inducted as a fellow into the American College of Medical Informatics, in 2014 he was elected to the American Pediatric Society, and in 2012 he became a Vice President of the International Medical Informatics Association in charge of the IMIA Yearbook to serve as President from 2017-2019. Dr. Lehmann was elected to fellowship in the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics in 2017. From 2010 to 2019, Dr. Lehmann was the inaugural Medical Director of the Child Health Informatics Center for the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he was involved in developing the Model Pediatric EHR Format and the CHILD Registry. Dr. Lehmann served on the federal Health IT Policy Committee and co-chaired the Health IT for the Care Continuum Task Force at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. He was the first chair of the Examination Committee of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, Subcommittee for Clinical Informatics from 2013 - 2018. Dr. Lehmann received this MD degree from Westf‰lische Wilhelms Universit‰t in M¸nster, Germany, and undertook postgraduate training in Pediatrics at Marshall University. He undertook fellowships in Neonatology and Medical Informatics at Johns Hopkins, and then joined the faculty at Hopkins, where at the time of his election to the College he held associate professor appointments in Pediatrics, Health Sciences Informatics, Dermatology and Nursing. He also served as Director for Clinical Information Technology of the Johns Hopkins Childrenís Center and the Founding Director of the Child Health Informatics Center at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Lehmannís research efforts have been in the applied clinical informatics area. He has focused on the use of health information technology and improved patient care, safety, and outcomes. He developed, implemented, and evaluated several health IT tools that have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing provider errors, reducing costs, decreasing unnecessary medication usage, and improving safety. His work on provider order entry and clinical decision support for pediatric chemotherapy, and on prevention of ordering errors in pediatric parenteral nutrition has been highly cited. Dr. Lehmann served as one of the editors of the first textbook on Pediatric Informatics, and Editor-in-Chief of the Applied Clinical Informatics journal. Dr. Lehmannís professional service has included election to the Board of Directors of the American Medical Informatics Association and the Executive Committee of the Council on Clinical Information Technology of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He received the "Best Practice Award in Health-System Pharmacy" in 2006 by American Society of Health-System Pharmacy for improving medication ordering, dispensing, and administration for continuous infusions in pediatric patients. These scholarly and professional service achievements are recognized by his election to the College.
