Clinical Informatics training is unique in that fellows can come from any clinical specialty. In addition, many programs have funding constraints that must be considered in the match process.  While attempts were made to join the NRMP, San Francisco Match and others, ultimately AMIA was the only group willing to invest in developing a match system for clinical informatics.

The AMIA match is based on the same underlying “Stable Marriage” algorithm as the NRMP match, with some additional features to support the funding constraints of CI programs.  Like the NRMP, the AMIA match preferentially favors applicants so that they can match with the highest possible program on their list.

Though we are confident in the match algorithm on its own, because the Clinical Informatics match is still relatively small, we are able to perform an audit to ensure the results are accurate.  This audit is performed by two independent individuals after all the applicant and program rank lists have been submitted, but before the results are posted.
