The Institute of Medicine (IOM; now the National Academy of Medicine [NAM]) introduced the concept of a Learning Health System (LHS) in 2001 defined as “…one in which science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement, innovation, and equity—with best practices and discovery seamlessly embedded in the delivery process, individuals and families are active participants in all elements, and new knowledge generated as an integral by-product of the delivery experience.” These learning and improvement cycles feature phases of data to knowledge, knowledge to practice/performance, and practice to data. Robust informatics capabilities are critical within a LHS both as primary activities and also as enablers to care innovation.

The AMIA LHS-Working Group (LHS-WG) focuses on the intersection of informatics with LHS across subdomains and LHS capabilities including but not limited to: evidence sciences, implementation science, data science and technology systems so that real world data and real world evidence are natural byproducts collected in the processes of care.

Areas of interest to the LHS-WG include, but are not limited to:

  1. Increasing awareness of LHS activities in the informatics community
  2. Sponsoring the dissemination of LHS activities in the informatics community
  3. Building infrastructure for LHS at the intersection of informatics
  4. Strengthening and establishing a robust LHS informatics workforce

Mission

The mission of the AMIA LHS-WG is to facilitate communication, collaboration, training, and networking for informatics professionals who develop, apply and promote LHS capabilities.

Supporting a future with advanced informatics-related LHS capabilities for seamless and continually optimized evidence-based care.

Goals

The objectives of the AMIA LHS-WG are to build a community of LHS practitioners and researchers in AMIA, foster LHS research and applications, and establish connections among the group from different scientific backgrounds including outside of informatics, and countries.
