Explore a Career in Clinical Informatics
Clinical informatics brings together patient care, data, and technology to improve how healthcare is delivered. Physicians in this field lead the design and implementation of tools and systems that support safer, more effective care.
Pathway to the Subspecialty
For those interested in pursuing the field, the most direct path is a two-year Clinical Informatics fellowship accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Open to physicians from any ABMS-certified specialty, fellowship training provides hands-on experience in data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), clinical decision support, UI/UX design, and leadership.
Graduates are eligible for board certification through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) or the American Board of Pathology (AB Path) and pursue careers across health system leadership, academic research, and innovation in industry and policy.
Connect with the ACIF Community
The AMIA Clinical Informatics Fellows (ACIF) community connects physicians who are completing or have completed fellowship training, as well as those exploring the subspecialty. Members engage through peer connections, leadership opportunities, and resources that support professional development in clinical informatics. AMIA full membership is required.
