The AMIA Empowerment, Engagement and Representation (E2R) Committee and Subcommittees develop, promote, and guide the implementation of strategic and operational goals related to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The E2R Committee engages in such activities with specific attention to AMIA’s mission and its intersection with systemic racism and health equity. There is a natural intersection with health equity that enables the identification and tracking of disparities in health and healthcare as well as the design, implementation, and evaluation of informatics-enabled interventions at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels.
E2R Subcommittees
E2R Recruitment Subcommittee focuses on external outreach to marginalized or historically excluded groups to build awareness of AMIA and the informatics profession.
E2R Retention and Advancement Subcommittee develops volunteer leadership opportunities and pathways, mentorship and career guidance.
E2R Communications Subcommittee promotes diverse informatics voices, research, and activities through scientific content and presentation.
E2R Education, Governance, and Policy Subcommittee builds E2R practices into AMIA’s internal structures and policies; support E2R member education activities; and external partner benchmarking.
E2R Advancement of Health Equity and Antiracism in Healthcare Subcommittee positions AMIA to become a thought leader in addressing these topics at the intersection with informatics; serve as an organizational convener for education, research, and policy.
History
In July 2020 AMIA Board of Directors announced the creation of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force to guide and execute strategic goals and objectives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion through recommendations to the AMIA Board of Directors. The Task Force directed specific attention to AMIA’s mission and its intersection with systemic racism and health equity.
Since July 2020 the DEI Task Force moved forward with its efforts to understand where AMIA was relative to DEI and design recommendations for the AMIA Board of Directors to consider. Recommendations were presented in May 2021 and unanimously approved, including the establishment of the permanent Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee effective for the 2022-2023 term.
