Historic ACMI Biography
Dr. Denny has combined exemplary scientific productivity in Biomedical Informatics with outstanding accomplishments as teacher and as a practicing academic Internist. Dr. Denny began his career in informatics and concurrently initiated a track record of excellence while he was a medical student at Vanderbilt. He was elected to the honorary Alpha Omega Alpha society, and at his 2003 medical school graduation, he received the Geoffrey David Chazin Award for innovation in medical education and the Rudolph Kampmeier Prize in Medicine for career potential in academic medicine. During a 2001-02 Medical Scholars research sabbatical year, Dr. Denny (working with faculty mentors RA Miller and A Spickard III) developed KnowledgeMap (KM), a natural language processing system for web-based curriculum management. Dr. Denny described KM in a JAMIA article e-published in March, 2003. Vanderbilt Medical School has used KM as its primary curriculum repository and querying tool for the past decade. A half-dozen other U.S. medical schools have installed and used KM for their curricula.
