Keeping up with the literature in biomedical and health informatics is an essential professional endeavor – but one that is daunting, given the exponential proliferation of peer-reviewed publications in the field. One way to stay up-to-date is to turn to colleagues for their recommendations on what are the most relevant, interesting, or innovative papers.

AMIA communicates these most notable papers each year through the "Year in Review" session at the Annual Symposium. The “YIR” is consistently one of the most highly attended and valued sessions in the agenda.

To prepare the YIR for the AMIA 2019 Annual Symposium, AMIA’s Working Groups provided papers in their respective domains (nearly 90 in total) that represent the most influential or significant work published during the period of September 2018 through September 2019. Dr. Jim Cimino then summarized these papers, focusing on 57 with the highest impact and broadest interest—along with a nod to some of the most entertaining.

This activity brings this broadly interesting and engaging session-along with hyperlinks to abstracts and articles-to those informatics professionals who were unable to attend the live session.
