Practical Yoga for Informaticians: Healthy Body and Mind at CIC 2021

Start your day refreshed and relaxed with a yoga class before the AMIA 2021 Clinical Informatics Conference day begins.

The challenge of office work in sedentary environments and the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic affects everyone. Take time to take care of yourself and explore live online yoga classes created for AMIA 2021 Clinical Informatics Conference attendees.

  • No prior experience with yoga is necessary
  • No additional fee to participate
  • Sign-up and waiver required
  • Take all classes (recommended) or just the one that fits your schedule
  • Access to a recording will be available for those unable to attend the live course
  • Self-video in class is optional!

You will receive the Zoom link(s) to the classes before May 18th. There is a 100-seat capacity for the class.

Suggested props and accessories

  • A yoga mat or a non-slip surface on which to practice
  • Yoga blocks or sturdy books
  • Yoga blanket or large bath towel
  • Yoga strap or any long belt or scarf

Please wear comfortable clothes to move in, making sure there are no loose ends or anything one can trip on.

AMIA 2021 Clinical Informatics Conference Yoga Class schedule

Based on the yoga practice, strength and mobility principles and other movement disciplines.

Tuesday, May 18 8:00 – 9:00 a.m

Welcome to Yoga

This class will introduce some of the basic movements and poses in the yoga practice. It is meant to help us get into our bodies, move our joints and practice healthy breathing.

Wednesday, May 19 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.

Upper Body Yoga

This class will take time to do a good warmup and follow through with yoga poses and movements focusing on supporting and creating more space in the shoulders, necks, upper back, wrists and hands.

Thursday, May 20 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. Room opens at 7:45 a.m.

Lower Body Yoga

This class will take time to do a good warmup and follow through with yoga poses and movements focusing on supporting and creating more space in the hips, lower backs, ankles and feet.

Maria Hamburger
Yoga Instructor

Maria is an E-RYT 500 Certified Yoga Teacher with 10 years of experience training students for certification. She has co-led numerous immersion programs, workshops, and local and international retreats. She teaches online and leads a private practice where she works with students seeking to advance their personal practice or who have special conditions.

Some specialties include working with students with Multiple Sclerosis and with musicians. Maria has taught workshops sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Society and yoga classes at Georgetown Hospital to students with MS. Musicians and dancers at the University of Maryland and musicians from the Peabody Conservatory are clients in her practice.

Maria is also advancing her training through the study of Ayurveda and completed a certification in Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) as a mobility specialist.
