1) Describe how you have interacted with AMIA in the past.
I participated in the AMIA Clinical Informatics Conference (CIC) virtually this summer and a couple of
JAMIA Journal Clubs. I hope to contribute to the DEI work in some way since I am a Board Certified
Chaplain and my training has included ethics, empathy and DEI over the years. I have joined the
following workgroups:
AMIA First Look
Clinical Information Systems
Clinical Research Informatics
COVID-19 Community & Discussion Forum
Natural Language Processing
Student Working Group
Women in AMIA Discussion Forum
2) Explain why it is important to participate in the AMIA Annual Symposium and how this
experience will assist in your career development.
I have a poster and a team project that have been accepted for the 2020 AMIA Annual Symposium. I
am the team lead for a group of diverse students from various universities and we submitted a public
health surveillance design that was accepted in the top five for AMIA's Student Design Challenge. We
will present our design at the annual conference. So, it is imperative that I attend this annual
symposium as it will 1) be an opportunity for me to gain experience presenting at a national
conference, 2) help me gain feedback from participants to enhance my research and practice, 3)
enable me to learn from students, faculty, clinicians or informaticists and 4) provide needed
exposure amongst the medical informatics community (my new professional home).
3) What peer-reviewed poster, podium presentation, paper, panel or equivalent activity has been
accepted by the 2020 meeting SPC?
1) Poster - Why is Chaplain Documentation not being used Across the Care Continuum?
2) Student Design Challenge - A Novel Cloud-Based Approach to Community COVID-19 Public Health
Surveillance

1) Describe how you have interacted with AMIA in the past.
I am an AMIA student member and have participated in AMIA for a few years and have served as a
reviewer for AMIA conferences. I have submitted 4 papers and more than 5 abstracts (podium abstracts
and posters) to different AMIA conferences. I am actively participating AMIA in activities such as
seminars, journal clubs and student design challenge (accepted by AMIA 2020 Annual Symposium). I also
served as an AMIA 2020 Informatics Summit Student Volunteer. I have also submitted papers to JAMIA
and JAMIA Open and served as a reviewer for JAMIA.
2) Explain why it is important to participate in the AMIA Annual Symposium and how this
experience will assist in your career development.
I have 5 different presentations to make at the AMIA 2020 Virtual Annual Symposium: 1) student paper;
2) Podium Abstract; 3) Poster; 4) Student Design Challenge; 5) 7th KDDM Student Innovation Award
Competition in AMIA 2020. I really want to present my work at the AMIA 2020 Virtual Annual
Symposium and hear other professionals' comments and feedback. I would like to get connected with
other researchers in AMIA and in the informatics domain. Participating in the AMIA Annual Symposium
will definitely help me to explore potential opportunities for my future career.
3) What peer-reviewed poster, podium presentation, paper, panel or equivalent activity has been
accepted by the 2020 meeting SPC?
Paper - Student: (3400447) Three Data-Driven Phenotypes of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome
Preserved from Early Childhood to Middle Adulthood.
This work has also been selected as one of the three finalists in the 7th KDDM Student Innovation Award
Competition in AMIA 2020 and I will present it in the AMIA 2020 KDDM Workgroup business meeting.
MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE REMINDER
Thanks to a generous $50,000 anonymous gift to the
AMIA LEAD fund, we launched a matching gift challenge through the end of 2020. For every dollar donated to the LEAD fund during this time period, gifts will be matched 1:1, up to the maximum amount of matching funds available. A donation amount of $100 is suggested, however, gifts at all levels are encouraged and our hope is to demonstrate our community’s commitment to future informaticians during this unprecedented time. Please donate so that all gifts can be matched!
As a reminder, funds that are raised via this mechanism will be used to augment and enhance current AMIA LEAD fund programs, including:
Providing travel awards or stipends for students to support their attendance at AMIA convening activities and/or virtual meetings; and
Providing scholarship to students or early-stage informatics investigators and practitioners to participate in AMIA sponsored training programs.
